When should I paint the room's ceiling?

Have you ever thought about when you should paint your house ceiling?

It may seem strange at first, but only those who have seen a well-done painted ceiling, know how much it is capable of transforming an environment. What will dictate the footprint of this bold painting is your personality and, of course, what you want to convey in this space.

If you arrived here because you still don't know exactly how you want your ceiling to look and what it takes to paint, that's fine. We have listed color tips that fall best on certain types of ceilings, care that needs to be taken during the procedure, and techniques that will help make your home's ceiling paint the best it can be. Check it out!

What to consider before painting the ceiling?

It is important to know if the ceiling has any problem with infiltration or mold. If the answer is yes, the priority is to fix it. Besides, there are no restrictions on painting the ceiling of your home. Except, of course, if the ceiling is not timbered.

If there is no such barrier, just analyze whether the floor to ceiling height of your home is high or low. Once you have done that, it will help you choose the most suitable color, as dark ceiling colors tend to flatten the surroundings a little.

It is important to note that light colors give the impression of a higher and more luminous ceiling, while dark tones "make" the environment smaller. However, they bring a sense of warmth. But the ceilings of small rooms, when painted in dark colors, can become suffocating for some people. So, you need to measure the color tones carefully.

Does the type of ceiling interfere with work?

Yes. That's because smooth ceilings are much easier to paint. It does not mean that textured ceilings cannot be painted, but the process is a little more complicated. Also, both plaster and masonry ceilings are practical to be painted, especially if they are well flattened.

What colors look good on the ceiling?

No color is contraindicated. Quite the contrary: do what your imagination asks. However, those who have never done the procedure and want to experiment to see how it looks can start more smoothly. If you are afraid to regret it, begin by applying a pastel tone to adapt to the colored ceiling.

The result will be smoother but still, bring personality to space. Yet, to achieve this effect, be sure to invest in a different color than the one that was placed on the walls.

Ceiling painting care

First, you need to cover or move everything below it. In case there is furniture that is too heavy to move, you can pull it to the center of the room you are painting, away from the walls to be painted, and cover it with a plastic sheet to protect it. Then, provide drop cloths for the floor. Besides, protect the lamp sockets and ceiling corners with adhesive tape.

Furthermore, like any other surface, the ceiling needs to be prepared for painting. The process will depend on the surface, but in this post, we explain how to do it in masonry, and it serves as a basis for other types of finish. Following these procedures, just move on to painting.

Remember to invest in materials suitable for painting this type of surface, apply a coat of primer before the first coat and always paint in a zigzag pattern. This will ensure better coverage of the ceiling.

How to combine the painted ceiling with the rest of the decor?

Knowing how the ceiling will harmonize with the environment is essential. So, rely on the decoration of the space. Do the furniture and objects have neutral colors? If so, the chances of hitting with bright tones are higher. If furniture and decorative items already have intense colors, it may be interesting to choose softer or neutral tones.

Also, if you still don't know how to combine the colors, check out the post about the color wheel and how it can make your life easier when choosing color tones.
